Celtics vs Pacers Preview

To be honest, I'm writing this post at 5 in the morning so I don't know who will be ready or not for the game. I'm going to assume Rondo will play today, I don't think that Doc wanted his 1st games back to be back to back so I'll assume he starts. I don't believe Ray will play and I'll give Jermaine the nod too. So that would make our starters Rondo, Pietrus, Pierce, KG and Jermaine against Collison, Paul George, Danny Granger, David West and Roy Hibbert.

We are 0-2 against the Pacers this year and I hate it. I hate the way that them starting off hot with a 12-5 record justifies David West's decision to spurn the Celtics and join the Pacers. The Celtics however, are a different team than they were a week ago. They are coming off arguably the best win of the season and are playing at home and have their emotion on the rise.

The Celtics struggle on back to back games, but I see a perfect storm of a run coming a long. They have 3 under their belt so far and if they make it passed this game with a win they have Cleveland coming up twice and Toronto.

I think the guard play is the biggest advantage for the Celtics if we get Rondo back. With he, Pierce, Moore and Bradley in the back court they will be able to attack Collison and George early and often. I'm obviously concerned about the energy exuded last night, but like I said from day 1. You can't count these guys out.

Terrell Suggs: One of my New Favorite Players

There was some discussion this week about a scoreboard error at Gillette Stadium which made Baltimore kicker Billy Cundiff think it was the wrong down. This not only shook up his pre-kick routine on the sideline, it also seemed to force him to rush his lining up for a 32 yard field goal. A field goal he famously missed.

There was an attempt by some to turn this into SpyGate 2.0. It's being called ScoreboardGate. And one Ravens coach (Randy Brown, the Ravens' kicking consultant) when asked about the possibility of the Patriots intentionally sowing confusion said "I don't think you can rule anything out in New England, can you?"

The story never took off, despite considerable effort from the bombastic and outlandish wing of the sports media. Outside of Boston, some people tried to make a name for themselves by spewing innuendo, and implying some scoreboard trickery. And inside of Boston, fans and media stalwartly defended their team against an attack that never really came.

WEEI.com's headline, for instance, read "Ravens blame scoreboard for missed kick." Which wasn't true at all. The Ravens didn't make any assertion. The aforementioned Brown was led to say what he said. Which was kind of stupid, but the kicking consultant is hardly the voice for the entire Ravens organization. And head coach John Harbaugh called the whole notion of foul play "nonsense." None of the Ravens made accusations. All accusations were made by sports media people, who then tried to generate a story about the accusations that they themselves made. Sort of like accusing someone of being an alien, then referring to them as an "alleged alien."

The media tried to make a story out of nothing, but their wheels never got any traction. Mainly because despite the confusion, Cundiff should have still made the kick. And also because any sensible person could realize that the scoreboard's error was due to miscommunication over a ruling on Anquan Boldin's fumble out of bounds, which brought the ball back to where he last controlled it, not where it left the field of play. Moreover, the circumstances were so weird that the notion of premeditation was absurd.

Imagine Belichick telling a scoreboard operator, that just in case the Ravens fumbled a ball out of bounds past a first down marker, to screw up on the down and distance, thus confusing the placekicker. That's a little far-fetched, even for the Arlen Specters of the world. And he's the guy who came up with the Magic Bullet Theory.

Terrell Suggs had the best dismissal of this non-story, when Skip Bayless tried to jumpstart the conspiracy theories.

I'm glad Suggs called out him out. But asking Skip Bayless not to be a douchebag is like asking water not to be wet.

Even after Bayless tries and fails to get Suggs to accuse the Patriots of cheating (using a gentle sounding euphemism like "home-cooking"), he then tries to get Suggs to badmouth his own coach. He tries to start one fire, then moves on to start another.

Bayless is a tool. And that's why he has a job. Which makes him an even bigger tool. And makes people who watch him, even if they hate him, tools. Because people do like to watch him be a douchebag, and that's why he gets paid. And that pisses me off.

I want a "Be an Analyst, Don't be a Douchebag" t-shirt. Of course Bayless is such a tool that he'd probably be the one selling them.

Andrew Bogut Hurt Again

Andrew Bogut is hurt again, this time it's a broken left ankle. Imagine what Andrew Bogut or the Bucks would be if he stopped having all these terrible injuries, let's break down his horrific injury past:

In 2007, Bogut's sophomore season in the league was cut short after spraining his left foot and being put on the injured reserve for the final 15 games.

In 2008, Bogut missed 43 games, including the final 31, with an injured lower back.

In 2009, Bogut missed the end of the 2009-10 season when he dislocated his right elbow,sprained his right wrist and broke his right hand in a hard fall to the floor.

In 2010, the previous injury lingered, holding him to only play in 65 games.

And now this.

I used to make excuses when the Celtics had Delonte West and he would have, what I call, "try hard" injuries. Injuries that happened because you tried hard and something went wrong like a broken bone, etc. The opposite of Jermaine O'Neal or JD Drew injury. But sometimes people are just really fragile, and although Bogut could be a great player when healthy, he just never is.

This sucks for the Bucks because after they made that run a couple years ago, they just haven't been able to get over the hump of mediocrity.

NHL All-Star Teams Selected

There's really only two interesting parts of the NHL's All-Star weekend: the draft, and seeing whether or not Chara can break his own fastest shot record. Last night was the draft, with Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson and former Senator Zdeno Chara picking teams.

Not surprisingly, all the Slovaks and Bruins wound up on Chara's team. All the Swedes and Senators found their way to Alfredsson's team. Carey Price will also be on Team Chara. So will Dennis Wideman. No Canucks wound up with Chara.

But Phil Kessel did. I'm so glad Kessel is not on the Bruins. He puts up impressive numbers (except against the B's), but he's such an awkward creep. Chara's assistant captain for the draft was Toronto's Joffrey Lupul, so the Maple Leaf connection saved PK81 from more shame.

So Tim Thomas, Tyler Seguin, and Zdeno Chara will be on the same team. I'm going to predict that Thomas will allow 4 or 5 goals (no defense in the All-Star Game), Chara will win Fastest Shot, and Seguin will get a hat-trick.

Why the Sox MUST HAVE Jackson or Oswalt

Rumors are flying around Boston that the Red Sox are pursuing Edwin Jackson and Roy Oswalt. They've even been offered contracts, according to these rumors. These rumors aren't flimsy whispers, either. These are the loud, shouting, firm rumors. The kind that originate from the Red Sox' Front Office through their network of leaks and anonymous sources.

Either pitcher would help solidify the Sox rotation. The Sox cannibalized their bullpen in order to fill the gaps in that rotation, and there's no guarantee that a guy like Bard will be able to cut it as a starter. The Sox could use something a bit more concrete.

Jackson won 12 games with a respectable 3.79 ERA last season, split between the White Sox and Cardinals. He's far from an Ace, but he's a guy who can throw a decent 200 innings at the bottom of your rotation.

Oswalt isn't as appealing, but he might be cheaper to get. I doubt he'll recapture much of his 2010 form, when he was 6th in NL Cy Young voting. But the 33 year old still has something to offer.

So either guy improves the rotation, provides some depth, some insurance, some solidity.

But the Sox need to sign one of them for different reasons, for off-field reasons. I got an e-mail from RedSox.com last night, telling me that a majority of tickets go on sale tomorrow.

The Sox need something to keep the fans happy, to give them hope in 2012.

This off-season started with rage and frustration and an overwhelming desire for change. And apart from getting a new manager, losing a GM, and losing a closer, the Sox haven't changed much. No big ticket free agents. No blockbuster trades. No stud prospects coming from AAA. What is there for Sox fans to be excited about? What is there to drive them to spend money on tickets?

The Sox also have to compete with the Patriots, who are going to their 5th Super Bowl in 11 years. The Bruins just won the Cup and will likely see their season extend deep into the warm months. People in Boston only have so much money to spend on sports. And those dollars are shifting away from the Red Sox.

The Sox haven't made the playoffs since 2009. Haven't won a playoff series (or even a playoff game) since '08. Their TV ratings are going down. They still have that sellout streak, officially, but we've all seen more than a handful of empty seats at a few games.

The Sox need to make some sort of noise. They need to make it at least appear as though they want to win a World Series. This weekend is perfect to do so. The Pats have a week off. The Bruins are in an All-Star break. Time to fill the sports sections of the Globe and Herald with rumors and contract offers.

That's why the Jackson and Oswalt rumors have been so widespread, so firm, and so specific. Even if Jackson and Oswalt don't sign, the Sox have made it very public that they're trying.

Sox fans need something to look forward to in 2012. They want hope, and the Red Sox need to start selling them that hope.

Who says, UBUNTU is dead?

I have been saying for a while that the Celtics still have a punchers chance and you can't count these guys out ever. And that's what the Celtics proved last night. Doc Rivers may be only 8-9 on the season, but the past 2 wins are certainly statements that the Celtics are regaining form.

The Celtics have already been bitten hard by the injury bug and the 3 out of their 5 starters were out with O'Neal, Rondo and Ray. But they did get Mickael Pietrus, Chris Wilcox and Keyon Dooling back.

What do you think hurts more for the Magic, losing by 31 points or blowing a 27 point lead?

I'm so excited writing this post I don't even know where to begin. Well, OK, the first half was shitty. The Celtics looked unenthusiastic, uninspired and were playing shitty offense and defense. The only good thing that came in the first half was that Dwight Howard got in early foul trouble.

But then Doc Rivers must have had one hell of a halftime speech because the Celtics were able to come back from a 58 to 37 deficit.

The Celtics went on a 17-7 run in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd to cut the lead to 11. The defensive intensity was picked up significantly from Avery Bradley, Brandon Bass and KG. Also the ball movement was impeccable.

In the 4th, the Boston run was still going on as they went on a 32-8 run. Their 15 -3 run in the fourth quarter has highlighted their defense, with Orlando unable to make their first basket until 5:56 left in the quarter, a whole 6:02 without a made field goal. Amazing.

Now onto the players, if I had to criticize Doc about his coaching style it would be to play rookies more. Although we still haven't got a lot of JuJuan Johnson, we saw that 2nd round pick E'Twaun Moore has some giant balls as he went 5-6 from the floor, 4 for 4 from beyond the arc and finished with 16 points. This kid can shoot, and as the season goes on I expect a lot more of him and a lot less of Keyon Dooling.

Paul Pierce is finally getting in basketball shape and it has shown for the past week, he had 24 points and 10 assists in the game.

Tonight will be against the Pacers to even up the record at 9.

The Celtics will be without Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo once again tonight, but that didn't seem to matter the last time when the Celtics embarrassed the Magic 87-56. Do I see that happening again? Sorry, I don't, you have to think the Magic are going to come out and show some kind of pride.

Paul Pierce is obviously going to be the key tonight, as he is going to have to carry the offense once again. He has looked a lot more in shape lately, and that has translated into us seeing the Pierce we are all used to. It also sounds like the Celtics will get Mickael Pietrus, who has not only played great defense for the Celtics but has been a nice offensive spark off the bench. Also, Chris Wilcox (left calf) and Keyon Dooling (right knee) sound like they will be on the court tonight.

Looks for Stiemsma and O'Neal to get a bunch of fouls called on them once again, as the best defense against Howard is to keep sending him to the line.

Like I said, this is a huge pride game for the Magic, so this game will be a lot closer, but I still see the Celtics pulling it off especially after a couple days of rest.

Nationals Sign Brad Lidge

The Nationals have signed former Phillies closer Brad Lidge to a one-year deal (rumored to be around $1MM with some incentives). Lidge appeared in just 25 games for the Phillies last season because of a shoulder injury, but was 0-2 with a 1.40 ERA in those 25 games. I always liked Lidge, maybe it's because I felt bad for him in that playoff game a while back when Pujols hit the an absolute bomb off him, but I always seem to end up rooting for him.

Lidge likely will not come in as the closer as the Nationals have Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard. Still, it's a nice pickup by the Nationals and since it's a 1 year deal there is basically very little risk.

Injured Eric Gordon Rejects 4 Year Deal From Hornets

The NBA-owned New Orleans Hornets offered Eric Gordon a four-year extension and the guard rejected it on Wednesday. He will be a restricted free agent on July 1. The Hornets also learned today that Gordon will be out at least 3 more weeks with that knee injury he has been battling next year.

Although this is bad news for the Hornets they can still match any offer made to him this offseason.

Bucs About To Hire Greg Schiano As Coach

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are near an agreement to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano as their new head coach. Don't know who Greg Schiano, well you're probably not alone. He is the head coach of Rutgers.

Rumor is that Greg Schiano wasn't the Bucs first choice. They actually wanted Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, which I think would've been very interesting. After talks with Kelly fell through they turned around and offered Schiano a contract. It is said that the Bucs called Belichick and he spoke very highly of him.

The Bucs have talent, but they seemed to really lose focus this year losing the last 10 games of the season. If they can get Freeman back on track, and Mike Williams to wake the hell up (every time I watched him I wasn't at all impressed) they could be a decent offense.

Bucs have the 5th pick overall, and Mel Kiper has them taking Trent Richardson. A combo of Blount and Richardson could make things very interesting for that offense that was ranked 30th in the NFL.

Vin Baker's Story Is One Of The Funniest Things I Have Ever Read

I remember on July 23, 2002 I was the most pissed off person in Boston. The Celtics traded Kenny Anderson, Vitaly Potapenko and Joseph Forte to Seattle for Baker, a Connecticut native, and the backup guard Shammond Williams.

Vin Baker came to Boston and immediately regressed into the drunk. Baker revealed that he was a recovering alcoholic who used to binge in hotel rooms and at home after playing poorly. And after then coach Jim O'Brien smelled booze on his breath at practice he was suspended and ultimately released.

Now he is saying that his financial adviser lost him millions of dollars. He claims his financial adviser lost nearly all of his $86 million nest egg through negligent investments.

C'mon man. Your financial adviser didn't lose you money, YOU lost you money. You obviously were too irresponsibility to make millions playing a game, the odds that you made some bad decisions off the court makes complete sense. It's called Karma Vin, and it just caught up to you.

Colts Hire Chuck Pagano

I love this hiring by the Colts. Chuck Pagano will bring a toughness and change into Indy. He's a defensive mind and is a 3-4 guy which means there are a lot of changes coming. The Colts obviously have a lot of decisions this offseason and other than Peyton Manning, Robert Mathis is a free agent.

If Pagano were to move into a 3-4 like defense, that would make Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis (if they signed him) outside linebacker pass rushers like James Harrison and Lamaar Woodley. Which would be a pretty good start. They would need to address the defensive line which they would need to find a guy to plug up the middle (Casey Hampton will most likely be available) and two bigger defensive ends.

Now onto Manning, with more and more hirings/ firings I either think 2 things are going to happen. 1. He's released, 2. He retires. Let's not forget that he has a neck injury and Peyton right now, doesn't even know whether he can play or not. The Colts are in a position where they need to rebuild, rather than retool, which probably means Reggie Wayne is gone.

Now that every top tier free agent is gone, the next level is Edwin Jackson and Roy Oswalt are the 2 prized possessions.

The Red Sox apparently offered a contract to Jackson yesterday, and although I would love him, I just don't see how the Sox are going to pull this one out. Today, his agent Scott Boras has said that Jackson's willing to accept a one year deal, meaning, all the offers we got were shit and we are looking for top dollar.

I've read that Jackson is also leaning to stay in the NL over the AL. Which you can't blame him, the NL is easier and you don't have the media presence that you would have in Boston.

Although I like Jackson, I'm going to saddle back a little and not act like we are getting an "Ace" here, we are getting a very good 4th or 5th starter. Jackson can throw over 200 innings, but he is also a huge risk when he is out there, he walks a ton of people and can be out by the 6th inning. He has AJ Burnett syndrome where there is always a chance he goes out there and throws a hell of a game.

I'd prefer Jackson, but I'm starting to believe that won't happen.

Dwight Howard Says There's A Chance

That's a pretty awesome picture.

When Howard was asked about potentially joining the Celtics, this was his response:
"Always. Always," Howard told the Herald. "I’d always listen to a team like that. "My thing is I want to win. It’s not something like I’m doing this for money. I win. I want to do it my way."

and

"You know," said Howard, "you look at a team like Boston and look at a team like LA who's won . . . especially Boston. Man, those guys came together and they didn't care who scored all the points. They had done all the individual stuff.

"You know, for me, I've done a lot of things individually, but I want a championship. All those accolades that I've got over the years, they mean a lot, but it's just different watching teams hold up that trophy and knowing how hard you have to work to get it.

"They have the championship mentality," he said of the Celts. "It means a lot. Like I said, I like the team. They play hard and they go after it, and that's what I like."

I don't wan't to give my hopes up because of yesterday, I was assuming Kevin Love would be in Celtic green.

I have mixed messages when it come to Howard, I don't like him, I think he's not meant to be a primary player and more fit to be a secondary guy, but there is no denying his talent especially with rebounding and defense. His offense scares me, and the fact that he still hasn't developed post moves is concerning. Howard would be an absolute game changer for any team in the NBA. So even though I expect him to go to LA or NJ, the fact that he's not throwing Boston out the window is pretty awesome.

I don't know what will happen after this year, or after the trade deadline, but if there is a chance Danny gets Dwight, he should do it.

Mark It Down, Roy Oswalt Is In A Red Sox Uniform Next Year (2 UPDATES)

Within the next week the Red Sox will come to Terms with Roy Oswalt for a 1 year, 8 Million dollar deal.

Roy Oswalt is exactly what we are looking for and would be a great pick up for them. Would I say that this puts them over the top and they win a World Series? Not right now, but he will be a great 4th, 5th guy. Last year he underwhelmed with a 9-10 record with a 3.69 era and only 139 innings. I really can't see an improvement from that to be honest, but Cherington needs to get the public back on his side.

Roy Oswalt will at least bridge the gap until Dice K comes back from elbow surgery, so even if he gets injured, it's fine, Ace K is on the way.

BMack thinks no way, no how, the Sox spend any more money, but I'm more optimistic about our ball club.

So Welcome to Boston Roy.

A University of Wisconsin student alleged that an athletic department official grabbed his crotch at an alcohol-fueled party during the football team's trip to the Rose Bowl. The report says the student alleges former senior associate athletic director John Chadima put his hand down the student's pants at the end of a party in Chadima's suite at a Los Angeles hotel on Dec. 31.

The student said he was "shocked and frightened" and slapped Chadima's hand away.

Chadima was put on administrative leave on Jan. 6 and resigned the same day. He previously had issued an apology for a "lapse in judgment". "I make no excuses and have come to the realization that over the past few months, alcohol had controlled and consumed my life," Chadima said. "I am taking steps to correct that problem in my life at this time. I will take full responsibility for my lack of judgment and actions that evening (CBS Sports)."

Kevin Love Agrees To Extension With Timberwovles

Kevin Love has caved and signed the 4 year extension with the Timberwolves worth over $60 million, so any dream of him coming to the Celtics (via free agency) is basically over. One interesting note about this is the last year of the 4 year deal is a player option, which means he could opt out at the end and become an unrestricted free agents. Still, that is so long away that it won't be interesting for awhile.

Love is just 23 year years old, so if (or when) he opts out he will still be in line for another HUGE contract, so enjoy it will you can Timberwolves.

Miguel Cabrera To Move Back To 3rd

First baseman Miguel Cabrera confirmed that he will shift to third base in 2012 with the addition of Prince Fielder on Tuesday. That should be really interesting. Cabrera hasn't played there since 2008, so you have to wonder how that will go. Cabrera is not exactly known for coming back in the best shape, but if he can pull it off it will be huge for this team. Not just for this year, but for next year when they get VMart back, since he is basically a full time DH now.

My guess is that this season he plays around 50% of the games there if it goes well, and then use other guys like Inge to fill in. Definitely something to watch, because that could go to hell fast. It wouldn't hurt them that bad this year, but it could spell the end of VMart in Detroit for 2013 if Cabrera can no longer handle 3rd.

In a perfect work having a lineup with VMart, Cabrera, and Fielder would be pretty sick.

Raiders Hire Dennis Allen As Head Coach

Dennis Allen, the former defensive coordinator of the Broncos, has been hired to be the next Raiders head coach. The Raiders also interviewed Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice and former Dolphins defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. This is actually kind of a change from the type of guys they usually hire. Most of the guys the Raiders have hired in the past are offensive minded guys (Hue Jackson, Tom Cable, Lane Kiffin, ect).

Allen did a hell of a job with Denver's defense this year, so he probably deserves a shot, but the Raiders (as I have said in the past) really need to just stick with someone. They have been through so many damn coaches it's crazy. They need to settle on someone and let him build. Hopefully, for their sake, this is the guy.

I know they are working on a 4 year extension and it is obviously, probably going to happen, but please God, let the Timberwolves fuck this up. He is expected to sign a four-year, $62 million contract extension. Which I believe is a real low ball offer to a guy who is a premier rebounder and a good all around player.

I have been dreaming of a team that has Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Kevin Love and Dwight Howard in green, with Ray and KG back for real low money. Kevin Love's contract extension or lack of one will dictate the Celtics moves for the rest of the season. If somehow this falls through, there is a chance Ainge will wait out the season, if not I'll put the blow up meter up to 40%.

So please Timberwolves, mess this up.

More On Prince Fielder Signing

Now that the dust has settled and Prince Fielder and the Tigers agreed to a nine-year contract worth $214MM, I have to admit, I'm cautiously optimistic about the deal.

For probably the next 5 years the Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, 3/4 in the batting order will be the scariest duo in baseball. Miguel Cabrera is one of the best pure hitters I have ever seen in my life and that paired up with Prince who is obviously known for the power swing has got between 38 and 50 home runs the past 5 years, but also hits for average (he's a career .282 hitter). This signing also helps out the whole line up. This will make players like Austin Jackson, Delmon Young and Johnny Peralta lives so much easier with this protection in the line up. This also pretty much makes the loss of Victor Martinez irrelevant. I believe Tigers fans would do the Prince for VMart deal any day.

I also believe after the initial 5 years of this contract, the worst player he turns into is David Ortiz and if I was a Tigers fan, I'd take that in a second.

That offense paired with a pitching staff led by Justin Verlander makes the Tigers the instant favorite for that division and maybe even the World Series.

Because everything comes back to the Red Sox in this blog, how much does the Adrian Gonzalez 7 year, 154 million dollar look like a steal? I would still take Adrian over Prince or Pujols if you ask me.

Capitals 5, Bruins 3

There are times when the Bruins seem to lose patience with the Julien system. That's when they try making passes through opponents, instead of making more conservative decisions. I think last night we saw some impatience by a few Bruins, who tried making something out of nothing, and wound up giving golden opportunities to the Caps, who took full advantage of them.

Washington's third goal came when Boychuk attempted a D-to-D pass, even though he had no space, neither did Chara, and Mathieu Perrault was hot on his heels. Perrault easily intercepted the pass and scored.

Washington's fourth goal, the game-winner, came after McQuaid telegraphed a D-to-D pass in the offensive zone. The ensuing Capitals' possession eventually resulted in a goal. Had McQuaid made a better decision, then the scoring opportunities would have never happened.

The Bruins' formula for success is a combination of intense effort and intelligent decisions. Last night, the effort was there, but the intelligence wasn't.

And no, I don't think Thomas not going to the White House had anything to do with this loss. Although, since he's going up to Canada's capital for the All-Star Game, I wonder if he'd refuse to meet Canada's Prime Minister, if invited.

Bruins don't play a meaningful game until next Tuesday, when they host the Senators.

Breaking News: Prince Fielder Signs With Tigers

So, we listed the 4 teams earlier today that Fielder was supposedly going to and it ended up being none of them. Fielder will be with the Tigers next year (same team his dad played for, but he's a douche), as they signed him to a nine-year, $214MM contract.

Right now word is Miguel Cabrera will move over to DH, and Fielder will play 1st. Whatever they decide to do there won't matter because that should be a sick middle of the order and one hell of a replacement for VMart.

Here's hoping that Cabrera and Fielder can stay out of the kitchen and don't have any Man vs. Food challenges.

Bruins @ Capitals Preview (UPDATED)

The Bruins will be staying in Washington DC tonight after their celebration at the White House. Much like that event, the game tonight will be missing a superstar as Alex Ovechkin is serving a 3 game suspension.

On top of the Capitals being without Ovechkin, they are also missing Nicklas Backstrom (concussion), and defenseman Mike Green (abdominal surgery). Those are some huge blows.

The Bruins will be playing without Ference (as Rob talked about earlier), and Horton. I am a little worried about Horton, because he is dealing with another concussion and we all just have to hope he isn't going down the same road as Savard. Currently he is listed as day-to-day.

As for this game I expect the Bruins to crush them. Thomas has been lights out against these guys (-4-2 with a 2.49 goals-against average in 20 career games versus Washington).

Ference Gets Suspended 3 Games

With the Patriots winning and Paterno dying, and of course the even bigger story about Tim Thomas not going to the White House, we didn't notice a BS suspension. Andrew Ference got suspended 3 games for his hit on Ryan McDonagh. Here's Brendan Shanahan's explanation:

Well, in my opinion, McDonagh did contribute to this hit by getting in Andrew Ference's way. Shanahan describes this as a textbook example of boarding, but to me, the textbook boarding has been when someone lines a vulnerable opponent up, then strikes when the opponent CANNOT defend himself. Not when an opponent obstructs your path to the puck, then places his legs in such an awkward wide stance that he has decided not to defend himself.

Ference, a relatively clean player, now has a black mark on his record. He got suspended the same number of games as Ovechkin did for this hit:

So Ovechkin launches himself, hits an opponent in the head, and has a history of suspensions and fines. Ference boards McDonagh, doesn't hit him in the head, and has no history of dirty play. And they're suspended the same number of games?

Shanahan admits that Ference shows no malicious intent in the hit. It was perhaps reckless. In which case, a fine or one game suspension is sufficient, I think. Then if Ference develops a habit of reckless hits, the suspensions can increase.

Ference is a 12 year veteran with a clean record and he gets suspended 3 games because McDonagh braced himself awkwardly and tried to block Ference from the puck. Seems a bit harsh.

So Is Prince Fielder Going To Sign Soon?

Spring training is really not that far away, and Prince Fielder is still looking for a home. There are some rumors that he could sign by the end of the week with the rumored teams interested are the Orioles, Rangers, Nationals, and Dodgers.

I don't see Fielder going to the Orioles, because they just aren't that good, so unless they cave and throw crazy money I don't see him going there. The Rangers just spent a ton of money on Davish, and I don't know if they will have the cash to go get him, although I do think that's the best place for him. The Nationals seem to be the favorite. They are known for throwing around money, and are a very up and coming team. The Dodgers are the wild card in my opinion. There is an argument that this team would be worth more if Fielder was on the squad, the other side is that there will be no offer until after they are sold.

So my opinion is that he should go to the Rangers, but will end up with the Nationals.

Breaking News: Flip Saunders Fired

The Washington Wizards (2-15) have fired coach Flip Saunders. There is nothing really surprising about this. There is no excuse for being this bad. This roster does have enough talent to not be this terrible.

Right now this team doesn't do anything well. They don't score (27th in the league), they don't rebound (23rd), they don't play defense (26th), and this don't pass (29th). I can't say I have seen this team play a lot this year, other then when they play the Celtics, but I would think they need to bring in some kind of hard nose defensive coach (though I think Flip was supposed to be that kind of guy). Guys like Blatche and McGee have some talent, but every time I see them I see huge lapses in concentration.

I don't mind Wall that much, so hopefully they can get a coach that can get the most out of him, and start to piece a team together around him. Then again, DP keeps saying this is a really strong draft, so tanking it and adding another stud with Wall could be their best option.

Tim Thomas Practices Free Speech, Gets Attacked For It

Most of the Bruins went to the White House yesterday, to be honored by President Barack Obama for winning the Stanley Cup. And by most, I mean all of them except Tim Thomas. Even Kaberle was there.

Peter Chiarelli says that Thomas informed him he wouldn't attend the event months ago, citing political differences with Obama. Thomas is a conservative, and seems like a Tea Party conservative.

I'm sorry folks, but that's his right to not go. I personally would have gone, even though I'm a conservative too. I don't like Obama, but I don't hate him. And going to the White House and meeting the President would be a cool thing to do.

Then again, if I hated Obama and the Federal government, why would I want to go through the trouble of going through White House security, just to stand behind him as he made a speech and had a photo op? That doesn't sound like a fun afternoon if you really hate the guy.

I'm getting pissed off at people criticizing him over this.

"He put himself above the team."

"He disrespected the office of the Presidency."

I don't think he put himself or his politics above the team. It's not like Thomas refused to play a game because Obama was in attendance. He didn't go to a photo op in the White House. How does that hurt the team? I don't think his teammates are going to be pissed at him. I can't imagine Shawn Thornton staring angrily at him across the locker room, saying "We needed you yesterday, Timmy. Why weren't you there for us?"

Did he disrespect the Presidency? I guess he did. He certainly didn't show an overwhelming respect for the office. Then again, it doesn't seem like he has much love for any Federal office. And can you blame him? Are we happy with our government's performance this past decade?

Here's the statement he made about not attending the event:

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

"Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

"This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT"

You might disagree with his ideological beliefs. You might think that despite his feelings, he should have gone and been in the background of pictures of the President. But to lose respect for him because he exercised his right to free speech? That seems hyper-judgmental, and un-American.

Some people criticize athletes for not expressing their beliefs. Some criticize them for expressing them too much. Tim Tebow, for instance, was praised by millions for vocalizing his faith. He was also criticized by millions for doing so. But ultimately it's his right to say what he wants, how he wants to. It's a fundamentally important part of this country that we're free to express our beliefs.

Of course, that also means that people are free to express their dislike for what Thomas did. And I'm free to call them childish for doing so.

And if this becomes a distraction for the team, then they must not have been very focused to begin with. Knowing this team, they'll probably rally around Thomas and his right to express his political beliefs. The media has already tried turning this into a big deal, and that tends to galvanize teams, uniting them against a common outsider (the media), not dividing them.

I for one did not lose respect for Thomas yesterday. Because I don't care about his political beliefs, or how he expresses them. I don't know Tim Thomas personally, and don't care to. I like him because he's a good goalie. I respect him because as a good goalie. As for his politics, so long as he stops the puck, I don't give a fuck.

And to those who are criticizing his credentials as a teammate, all I can say is that videos speak louder than words. Here's him sticking up for Aaron Ward in 2009.

I'm pretty sure Thomas would have stuck up for Ward even if Ward had voted for Obama (of course Ward is Canadian so he probably didn't).

Tim Thomas didn't want to meet the President. Just because Obama is the President doesn't mean that people should accept every invitation he extends. Thomas doesn't like the Federal government in general, so why should he spend a day with the head of the government if he doesn't want to? This has become a much bigger deal than it really is. I think Obama has moved on and has other things to worry about. I think the Bruins are focused on their game in Washington tonight. The only people harping on this are the media looking to rake some muck, and judgmentalists who like saying what other people should and shouldn't do.

Red Sox Make A Decent Move, Sign Ross

The Red Sox and Cody Ross to a one year, 3 million dollar deal.

Ross is a career .261 batting average and has 100 homers. And Although it doesn't seem like a huge player to have, he won't/can't be worse than J.D. Drew or Darnell McDonald. He hits for a higher average against lefties than righties and has decent pop in his bat. Last year he played all 3 outfield positions so he has decent versatility.

Yea he may not be an impact bat, but he will be a good right fielder and with the penny pinching Red Sox offseason taking shape, I don't think they did a horrible job. I really like our bullpen and obviously have some concerns at our 5th SP and SS. But it's starting to come together.

Tim Thomas Says F Off Obama

So everyone is up in arms about Tim Thomas not going to the White House. Our own BMack said, "Never thought I'd say this, but I lost some respect for Tim Thomas today". A lot of people on twitter also have the share the same feelings too. Why would you lose respect for a guy who did what he wanted to?

I have said many times, I don't care about politics. I don't vote and assume things will turn out the way I want to. I'm not knowledgeable enough to have a credible opinion, so I feel I shouldn't vote. It would be the same thing as me voting on the NHL All-Star game.

A couple athletes haven't gone to the White House and they include Ozzie Guillen and James Harrison. Given that the are both crazy and James Harrison didn't go because he said, "This is how I feel -- if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don't win the Super Bowl. As far as I'm concerned, [Obama] would've invited Arizona if they had won."

So who cares about reasoning.

Personally I would have gone because it would have been cool to see the White House, but everyone should have no problem with Tim Thomas not going to it. If he didn't want to go, he didn't want to go. People in Boston should care more about him stopping slap shots than his political views.

87 Celtics, 56 Magic

No Rondo, No Ray, No Pietrus, No Dooling, No Wilcox, No Problem.

I got the score right for the Celtics but boy was I off for the Magic. I'm not going to over react to this win, but I think the way we dominated the Magic pretty much means we are going to the championship, that Ainge isn't going to blow up the team, and that we are the most dangerous team in basketball.

The Celtics absolutely tooled on the Magic and were led by by Brandon Bass and Paul Pierce. Pierce has been playing like.... Paul Pierce the passed couple of games, he 19 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, meanwhile Brandon Bass had 19 points, 8 rebounds and ONE assist. KG also had a double double.

I may have been most impressed with Avery Bradley though. Jesus and Coobs have previously said they are done with him, however, he's a real good defender. He completely confused Jameer Nelson all game, he had 3 steals, but I could argue he completely took the whole Magic offense out of rhythm every time he was in. Bradley is frustrating offensively, but defensively he's an ace. The Magic had more turnovers (25) than baskets (16). They shot 24%.

But the best thing about this game is that the Celtics didn't take any of Dwight Howard's Bullshit (18 points, 14 rebounds), although he had a huge double double they got in his face, weren't intimidated and as much as we dislike Jermaine O'Neal he is perfect for pissing people off. He and Howard were jawing back and forth all game and had to be separated at one point.

With 56 Points that's a record low for Orlando and ties a record low allowed by the Celtics. Big Baby got a pretty good ovation and scored 6 points on 2-9 shooting.

Great win, and Rondo should be back Thursday.

This can all change very quickly is Rondo and Ray Allen play tonight. But I will just presume to be both will be there and ready. The Magic are having a hell of a season and it's probably to Dwight Howard's dismay (because he's getting traded nowhere). There is nothing new with how the Magic play, 4 perimeter guys and Dwight Howard in the middle. And although, Kendrick Perkins was won of the best guys defending him, I believe Jermaine has enough pride to slow him down, even if it results in a foul. After Jermaine I get a little bit more nervous, Steisma hasn't been that great, I don't know if Wilcox will play and Bass/KG aren't built for that. So the key to this game is let howard beat you, and nobody else. If the Celtics play great perimeter defense and play a good high low game with KG and Jermaine to tire Howard out they have a chance. I also would attack Howard even though you run the risk of a blocked shot, but if he gets in foul trouble, they will crumble.

As A Patriots Fan The Giants Scare The Shit Out Of Me

The Giants bring the two things that every Patriots fan should be scared of... A passing game, and a great pass rush. We all know the Patriots secondary is weak. They have been able to cause key turnovers, but the Giants lit this team up not too long ago and ShEli is playing better then I have ever seen him play before. He is actually willing to sit in the pocket, take the hits, without just chucking the ball up. That is something he just wasn't willing to do before, and it's one of the reasons he has been so good in the 4th quarter.

We all know the way to mess Brady up is not just pressure, but pressure up the middle. The Giants have done it to him in the past. Brady is very good at moving around in the pocket, but when pressure comes straight up the middle he doesn't have the speed to escape.

The early line on this game is the Patriots by 3 1/2. I think that's too much. I would actually have this as a PK game. I really think it's going to be a nail biter. I will go over last in the week (and next week) how I think the Patriots can pull this off, but if you're asking me if I'm nervous... you're damn right I am.

Red Sox Trade Scutaro To Rockies

"Over the weekend, the Red Sox sent shortstop Marco Scutaro to Colorado for Clayton Mortensen. The right-hander posted a 3.86 ERA with 4.6 K/9, 3.7 BB/9 and a 52.7% ground ball rate in 58 1/3 innings for relief for the Rockies in 2011 and may prove useful in Boston. If not, at least the Red Sox avoided the $1.5MM buyout on Scutaro’s $6MM option and moved him without taking on salary (MLBTradeRumors)."

Most people seem to think the Red Sox did this, so they can turn around and make another move like sign Roy Oswalt, or trade for Gavin Floyd. Sorry, I'm not sold. I think this was made only so they did not have to pay the $7.67 million in luxury tax, and for no other reason. I want them to prove me wrong, and use this money for something they need, but I have my doubts. I really like Scutaro, I thought he was on of the few guys that showed up to play last year, and the year before he played hurt for them all year. I don't mind the del at all IF they use the money, but if this was just to keep their bar tab down, I'm pissed.

Paterno Dead, Survived by Asinine Fans

Joe Paterno lost his battle with lung cancer yesterday. I don't mind the outpouring of grief on the Penn State campus. I fully understand the praise he's getting for all the good he's done throughout his lifetime. After all, when someone passes, it's human nature to remember them fondly, and focus on their positive aspects.

But there's a line between grief and blind fanaticism. There's a line between emphasizing his positives, and denying that he had any negatives. And some have crossed that line. Todd Blackledge essentially spray-painted it blue and white. Here's what he had to say:

"I know the cancer took its toll. The treatment took its toll and had a part to play in it. His age and his frailty had a part to play in it. But I think as much as anything else, Joe Paterno died of a broken heart today. And I think there were a lot of people that had a part to play in that. Whether it be the Board of Trustees and the way they handled his situation. Even the media, and the way they covered everything over the last several months. I just think that was as much a part of him dying today as anything else. And that hurts my heart."

At least he admits that the 85 year old guy died partially due to cancer.

This is one word short of accusing the Penn State trustees and ESPN of being accessories to murder. These blind supporters of his can't even admit that his death was a normal human death.

Jordan Norwood called him "one of the most influential men in our nations history [sic]."

Wasn't it Martin Luther King Day last week? And don't we celebrate Washington and Lincoln's birthdays soon? I know these guys didn't win any national titles in the 80's, but maybe Paterno's impact on national history is small, even trivial.

Mike Ditka called him a "true hero," which was echoed by a Penn State student on ESPN who said quite simply "He's a hero."

Don't we have men and women in our armed services fighting and dying for us? Don't we have firefighters and cops? Don't we have people who call the cops when they hear about old men taking showers with young boys?

Paterno was not a hero. Even without the recent scandal, he was never a hero. He might have been a great leader and teacher, but not a hero. Heroes risk something. Heroes sacrifice.

He could have been a hero to some kids, but he decided that informing his AD was sufficient heroism for one day.

"It's kind of tragic that they [Penn State] weren't able to do something nice for him before he passed. It's kind of a shame..." That's what a fan on SportsCenter said.

It's kind of tragic that Paterno wasn't able to do something nice for some kids before their lives were ruined. It's a shame that even in death, he is still worshiped as a demigod, and not a man. His contributions deserve praise, and the people he's affected should mourn him. One mistake cannot define a man. It's okay to grieve him and emphasize the positive. But to address and summarily dismiss the negative is asinine, ignorant, and annoying.

I wouldn't mind if guys like Blackledge ignored the scandal in their time of grief. But to attribute his death to the Board of Trustees and the media is simply moronic.

This Superbowl Really Confuses Me

This game makes me so uncomfortable to watch, I remember when the 1st time they played in the Superbowl I was rooting hands down for the Giants. The Patriots were rolling on the 18-0 run and I didn't want Belicheat and Brady to go undefeated. This game is a little different though, if the Patriots win this gives them their 1st legitimate Superbowl Championship since spygate and gives Brady and Belicheat 4* rings. It also makes a mockery of football to, because then it proves that a team really doesn't need a defense to win in today's football. And with my favorite team being the Steelers, that doesn't bode well for them.

As for the Giants,
They pretty much match the Patriots fans for bandwagon/ annoying people. You have 10% legitimate fans, and the rest didn't know who David Tyree was until "The Catch". And since the New York Media is just excruciating as the Boston Media I can't give an edge that way too. I hate ShEli Manning more than any everyone in the NFL. I have hated him since his classless draft day nonsense and his stupid face. I constantly think he puts blame on his team rather than himself. There is no Strahan, no Tiki, no Antonio Pierce on the defense, so I don't get blinded in rage thinking about anyone on their defense.

So what are the positives for the Patriots; MHK, and how they have played for Myra. It was touching that BenJarvis Green Ellis scored and pointed to the patch. That's kind of it for me.

Positives for the Giants, I like that they have Victor Crus and how he went to UMass, and I wouldn't have to deal with Giant fans since I live in Boston.

So I guess for rooting purposes I'm going with the Giants and ShEli. I hope it's a 3-0 game with both QBs throwing 4 picks each.

Plus the Ravens should be in the Superbowl, with the missed call from the refs. Lee Evans had possession.

Joe Paterno Dies

There are many mixed emotions when it comes to Joe Paterno's death this weekend. There will always be the underlying child rape case that Jerry Sandusky was diddling kids at Penn State and that Joe Paterno didn't do enough to stop it. Joe Paterno did tell people in the University, but he didn't do enough as those people tried to sweep in under the rug. But since I have no emotion connection to Paterno and the University, let's forget the scandal and remember the man.

Joe Paterno was the head coach of Penn State University for 61 years, he has the most bowl wins than any coach in history, 2 National Championships, he ran a relatively clean program, won 409 games, 13+ separate Coach of the Year awards, and a bunch of other stuff.

Joe Paterno is and should be loved by the millions of people he came into contact in his 61 years. Millions of people still support him despite the child rape scandal going on. 61 years is a real long time and one blemish (although it's huge) doesn't make him Jerry Sandusky, and shouldn't take away from all the positive things he did over his lifetimes.

With that being said, if this scandal never came out, it's kind of sickening that Paterno probably would still be coaching Penn State and be looked at as a hero. So although this is a tricky situation, I don't really know how to feel about Joe Paterno or his legacy.

100 Celtics, 94 Wizards

No Rondo, No KG, No problem. The Celtics escaped the lowly Wizards in what was a pretty good game. Ray Allen got injured in the 1st quarter and didn't return. With the Celtics reeling after blowing a 15-point 3rd quarter lead, But The Truth, Paul Pierce took over the game. He scored 10 straight points during the fourth quarter.

It was vintage Paul Pierce, he finished the game 34 pints, 10 assists, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. He was an absolute monster. KG had 17 despite a slow start and our bench mob Mickael Pietrus and Brandon Bass finished with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Although Avery Bradley had an awful offensive game, I have to tip my hat to him for playing 41 minutes and guarding John Wall the whole game.

Tonight is against the Magic.

The Other Exciting Games This Weekend

I'm very happy that the NHLPA rejected the proposed realignment that would have reduced the number of times the Bruins play teams like the Devils, Rangers, and Flyers. Not only are these good Eastern seaboard rivalries for fans, but the hockey is simply fantastic to watch.

Starting with the Rangers game, it was a good, close-checking, hard fighting playoff style game. For the Rangers, who are looking to prove something to themselves as well as the League, it was a playoff game.

The Bruins needed to get more from their Power Play unit. Not necessarily scoring. They only got 2 shots on goal in 4 PP chances. That's not good enough. At the very least, you have to generate some opportunities, make the goalie work to kill the penalty.

Another thing the B's did was take too many shots that were clearly going to get blocked. It's one thing to shoot through traffic and have a defenseman block the shot down low. But when forwards are pressuring the point as much as the Rangers' were, it's inevitable that the shot won't get to the goalie. So don't take the shot.

One positive from the Rangers' game was how productive the defensemen were. Andrew Ference has become a sniper (and a thug, according to the NHL. More on that later).

The Flyers game saw more special teams struggles. The Bruins allowed 3 PP goals. There were some weird bounces that favored the Flyers. But the B's also allowed Hartnell to repeatedly set himself up in the middle slot. A hat-trick resulted.

The officiating was interesting. It seemed like the Flyers would hit a Bruin up high, there'd be some drama, an odd number of penalties issued, and the Bruins would wind up being shorthanded. Apparently, checks aimed at the head aren't as severe as standing up for a teammate.

That's the game, though. It can't be easy for a ref to keep a lid on these kinds of games.

I know the NHL wants to make sure that teams like the Bruins, Rangers, and Flyers visit every struggling market in the NHL, from Columbus to Phoenix to Nashville to Miami. The NHL wants these markets to have some games they can promote and sell out. But it's hockey welfare, redistributing wealth to markets that don't care much about the game.

It's not worth losing multiple games between the Bruins and Flyers, between the Bruins and Rangers. If anything, the Bruins should be playing these teams more than 4 times a year. Because these were some very exciting games, with good atmospheres generated by passionate fanbases.

How often do you see a natural hat-trick and a Gordie Howe hat-trick in the same game AND have it occur in front of fans who know what those terms mean?

The Bruins are in Washington Tuesday. They'll also meet the President. I'd like to hear a conversation between Marchand and Obama. "You got big ears, eh?"

Patriots 23, Ravens 20

The defense won this game. The defense and Billy Cundiff. It certainly wasn't the offense that won this game for the Pats. While I don't think Brady "sucked pretty badly," he wasn't good. The Patriots lost the turnover battle, Flacco in many ways had a better game than Brady, the Ravens accumulated more yards, and held the ball longer. But the Pats defense made some big plays in big moments and that's why the Patriots are going to the Super Bowl.

The defense did allow a pair of token touchdown drives, struggling to contain Rice and giving up chunks of yardage in the air.

But when Woodhead fumbled a kickoff return on the 28, the defense held Baltimore to a field goal (which gave the Ravens a 4 point lead instead of an 8 point lead). Spikes' interception might have been a big play if Brady didn't throw a pick a few seconds later.

In the 4th, the Ravens had a 3rd and 3 on the Patriots' 30 (48 yard field goal range). Wilfork stuffed Ray Rice for a 3 yard loss, and Baltimore was forced to go for it on 4th and 6 instead of kicking a field goal. The Pats did not allow the Ravens to convert that 4th down thanks to good coverage and pressure from the aforementioned Wilfork.

The offense had a chance run out the clock late but went 3 and out. The defense did allow a big 29 yard Anquan Boldin reception, which put the Ravens in field goal range. Then Sterling Moore saved the game by breaking up a pass in the end zone, then deflected the next pass. So at the very least, the defense preserved a tie.

Billy Cundiff did the rest.

The Patriots' offense wasn't bad all game. They just couldn't come up with many big plays. They struggled in the Red Zone, the Ravens got timely pressure on Brady, then there were the turnovers. Brady threw 2 picks, he also had one called back because of an illegal contact penalty, and he threw another one after an encroachment flag. He was not that sharp. He also missed a wide open Gronkowski and what would have been a touchdown in the 1st quarter. He missed a number of passes, and frequently threw into double coverage.

The Pats' best player had his worst game of the season, but because of Wilfork, Spikes, Moore, and Ellis, the Pats still won. And Brady will get a chance to redeem himself against the Giants.

Longest two weeks of the year. Let's party.

Suns @ Celtics Preview

Rondo is considered a game-time decision, but I would be pretty surprised if he plays tonight, and with Dooling also expected not to play it could be a tough night for the Celtics.

If I was the Celtics I'd start Avery Bradley. The kid has shown he can play some serious defense, and that could be enough to limit Nash a bit, who is really the only good player on the Suns. Pierce seems to be getting strong, so I expect him to be able to dominate Grant Hill.

If Rondo was playing I would say the Celtics would win this game by 15, but with him out you have to worry that if the Suns play a real up-tempo game they might be able to tire out the Celtics. I still don't think they will be able to pull it off.

This is the 6th time the Pats have been in the AFC Championship in the Belichick-Brady era. Think about that. 6 times since 2000. Before the B-B epoch (1960-1999), the Pats had reached the AFC/AFL title game a total of 3 times.

Last week, the Patriots were fortunate enough to face the #12 seed in the playoff tournament. They also played the worst QB in the playoffs. And maybe that good fortune has extended into the AFC Championship game. Joe Flacco is the worst QB remaining in the playoffs. 20 touchdowns and 12 picks in the regular season. An 80.9 rating, which puts him 18th in the NFL, between Kevin Kolb and Carson Palmer.

But you don't need a great QB to win a playoff game. Just ask Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Or ask the Ravens, for that matter. The Ravens have an excellent chance in this game, although it all depends on one thing. Can they get to Brady?

The Ravens were tied for 3rd in sacks with 48. Suggs had 14 on his own. They can get pressure on Brady. Which means the Patriots will have to rely on guys like Welker and Gronkowski to get open quickly. They'll also need that offensive line to play one of its best games of the season.

If the Ravens do get pressure on Brady and keep the Patriots' offense in check, they can run the ball, they can play possession football, and they can squeeze out a win.

It's tough to respect Flacco, though. It seems like if the Patriots go up by even 4, then Flacco will find some way to screw up.

This game will be tough for Brady and the offense to rack up an absurd number of points. But it'll also be tough for Flacco and the Ravens to do similar. I think the Patriots will win this in a tight contest.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have gotten better, the Rays just keep pumping out young talent. Don't even get me started that we have a oft-injured 3rd baseman, an already hurt RF, and a DH that can't do anything else but DH leaving no room to put anyone else there.

I am usually so positive when it comes to the Red Sox, but I just don't feel good about this team. Hopefully, I am wrong.

The Timberwolves were dragging their feet in offering Kevin Love a max contract, but they have finally caved, but it might be too little too late, as Love is very noncommittal about accepting their offer...

"We'll wait and see what happens," Love told the Star Tribune. "But between now and the 25th something will happen. Either something will happen positive or something will happen negative." The negative is Love becoming a restricted free agent in July.

There could be a couple reasons for this. First, he could be waiting for them to add on a 5th year to the deal which would make it worth $80 million. He could be pissed that they are dragging their feet at all since he is the best player they have had since KG. The last reason (and the one I am hoping for) is that he doesn't have any interest continuing to play for this sorry franchise.

Now, my guess is that even if he doesn't sign that the Timberwolves will match any deal since he is restricted free agent. If I am reading the rules correctly that will only keep him there for 1 more year. Which could still work out if he wants out.

So, the Celtics should have plenty of cap room by then. The problem then would be what would lure him in? Boston would certainly embrace him, I don't think there is any question there. Rondo could take Love's game to the next level, but I do think they would be hurting unless they can make some other moves. I don't know how they could convince Howard to come here next offseason, but if they did a core of Howard, Love and Rondo seems pretty awesome (other then having two awful free throw shooters).

I don't know, but it's fun to dream.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have arrested Cleveland Indians right-hander Fausto Carmona and accused him of using a false identity to try to obtain a U.S. visa, a police spokesman said.

Colonel Maximo Aybar Baez, a spokesman for the Dominican police, said on his Twitter account that Carmona, whose actual name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia, was arrested after leaving the U.S. Consulate in the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Authorities said Heredia is 31 years old and not 28, as he has claimed. The Indians list Carmona's birthday as Dec. 7, 1983, in their 2011 media guide. ESPN

Well the major thing the Indians should have discovered with Carmona is that the name Fausto is outrageous. His name alone would have been enough for me not to believe him. I don't know what happens with these things, whether the Indians can void his contract or not, but having a 31 year old soft tossing pitcher is a lot worse than a 28 year old soft tosser. Carmona had his worst year of his career last year going 7-15 with a 5.25 era and 109 Ks. I don't see him getting much better as well.

Russell Westbrook Gets Max Contract

The Thunder are extending Russell Westbrook to a 5 year, 80 million dollar deal.

Russell Westbrook is a good point guard, probably a top one in the league, but I do get worried about him feuding with Kevin Durant a couple times. I believe that it's blown out of proportion, but as their careers progress how will Russell Westbrook like playing little brother to Kevin Durant the whole time? Probably not.

Westbrook is averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists a game. And he can take over a game, but with Kevin Durant on the team, how many times would you want him to do that? I saw Monday 1st hand what Russell Westbrook can do when he's on, but a lot of the time he isn't that clutch.

I see them maybe winning a championship once with these 2, but I see it ending very bad.

On another note, Rondo's 5 year, 55 million dollar deal is a friggin bargain

The Bruins have an uncanny ability to turn up their intensity, focus, and dominate the 3rd period of games. If games only had 2 periods, the B's would be in the middle of the pack in the Conference. But thanks to their 3rd period play, they're one of the best teams in the NHL.

It was more of that last night. The Bruins recorded the first 10 shots on goal. Thomas didn't have to make a save until about 10 minutes into the period. And by then, it was 3-1 Bruins.

Ference had a snipe that Brodeur couldn't see thanks to his own teammate trying to clear Paille out of the slot. Horton had a tip in after some nice wing to wing to wing passing on the Power Play. And Campbell's goal came after a cross-corner dump in, a Jersey turnover, and a flurry of shots and rebounds off Brodeur.

This year the Bruins have pounced on teams when there's blood in the water. They've scored 2 goals in 1 minute 14 times this year. That's absurd. Last season, they'd score a goal and then play defensively, even relaxing a little bit. This year, they score one goal, and the next line wants to add to the total.

It must be demoralizing on an opponent.

Kelly added an ampty-netter. He has 14 goals this year. His career high is 15.

It wasn't a clean game, but it was a well-deserved win. The Bruins played it tight all game, then pulled away in the 3rd period. And Tim Thomas looks to be back to his A-Game.

Now they get to host the Rangers, whose owner is already talking about his team winning the Cup. Don't think that hasn't caught the attention of the Bruins.

The Bruins haven't been playing as well lately. They have dropped 2 of their first 3 on this 4 game roadtrip. They have been having to play a lot, and at times have looked worn down. The good news is that they should have some fresh legs tonight with Marchand and Peverley expected to be back on the ice tonight.

Marchand has been out for 5 games because of a suspension. He is one of the main sparkplugs on this team. He can score (tied for second on the Bruins with 16 goals) but he also gives the Bruins the tenacity that seems to be missing without him. Peverley is a guy I really like. I feel like he makes the players around him better (22 assists), and I love the fact he never seems to stop moving.

Tonight could still be a tough game. The Devils are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, and are riding a 3 game winning streak. Still, the last 2 times these teams have played Bruins have won, including a 6-1 blowout January 4th.

Orlando Cabrera has retired. I really liked him when he was with the Red Sox, but he has always been a very confusing player. I say that because he never seems to be able to stick with a team. There were rumors that he is kind of a dick, not to other players, but guys who worked for the team. Some say that's the reason he didn't comeback to Boston.

I was surprised when the Heat signed him, because I feel like he hasn't touched a court in years (played 7 games last year, 3 the year before). It has to be good news for the Heat that he has lost so much weight, but why does he still get so winded? I don't know how much he has left, but the Heat really need him to do SOMETHING, because they are terrible at the center postion (Joel Anthony/Dexter Pittman).

Texas Rangers Sign Japanese Prodigy

Japanese ace Yu Darvish will be pitching in a Texas Rangers uniform in 2012, agreeing to a six-year deal worth approximately $60 million on Wednesday. They also now, have a couple of days to pay the posting fee of 52 million to his old Japanese team, which they will surely do.

I like Yu Darvish and I believe he will be very good. I know that I always get fooled by these Japanese imports but I think he will be very good. The 25-year-old Darvish was 18-6 last season in Japan with a league-best 1.44 ERA and 276 strikeouts. He walked just 36 batters in 232 innings. Scouts have raved about Darvish's fastball command and what some say is a seven-pitch repertoire, which includes about everything but a changeup.

The only thing I may worry about is the Texas heat getting to him, but I really like the way the Rangers are doing things. They have a strong enough pitching staff in the AL West and have a huge offense (who's rumored to have interest in Prince Fielder). They may have the best shot to making it back to the World Series next year.

96 Celtics, 73 Raptors

Finally, after losing 5 in a row, the Celtics throttled the hopeless Toronto Raptors. I know the Raptors are a really bad team, but a win is a win and we at least didn't struggle.

Celtics starters set the tone with a big 1st quarter and put the game away in the 3rd. And the guy who led that unit is Rajon Rondo, who was aggressive, got to the line and finished the night with 21 points and only 2 assists (that seems weird). I don't know if I will ever understand Rondo, because I feel he could easily average 16 to 18 points a game if he just played like last night. He got to the line 11 times last night (making 7 of them) and was just on fire. The only thing that slowed Rajon was a hard foul by Linas Klieza. Rajon was decked by Linas Kleiza late in the 3rd quarter. When he hit the floor he landed on his right wrist. But he toughed it out and Rondo was able to take his free throws. Kleiza was hit with a Flagrant 1 foul. It is just a "sore wrist" and because BMack and I were at the game we didn't know the seriousness of the injury.

Hopefully he will be fine.

Ray and Paul both had off nights again totaling for 14 points total, but Paul did have 7 assists. KG had 15 and Jermaine played alright with 8 and 7.

I don't know what I think about Jermaine O'Neal. I want to like him, but I just can't. He obviously has his best days behind him, but I feel there is something still there.

We FINALLY got to see Jujuan Johnson. I have been wanting to see him all year, and although the game was a blowout when he came in, I like his game. He has a pretty decent jumper and got 2 rebounds and a block in 6 minutes of play. I'd like to see more of him, but Doc has his weird ways about him.

Well the Cltics have now lost 5 in a row and are getting exactly what the doctor ordered in the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors are 4-10 and just plain awful. I expect 2 people to kill the Raptors tonight, Rajon Rondo who should blow past Jose Calderon and Paul Pierce who has a lot of extra motivation after reading and listening to the media. Rasual Butler should be guarding him for the most part and Paul should be able to score at will on them.

Although I would love to see KG take on soft as tissue Bargnani, I know he won't, but he could!

Red Sox And Ortiz Are $4 Million Apart

Red Sox and David Ortiz are nearly $4 million apart in the numbers each side filed for a potential arbitration hearing. The report states that the Red Sox filed at $12.65 million, while Ortiz' number came in at $16.5 million (he made $12.5 million last year).

I think $16.5 million is absurd, actually I think $13 million is absurd, but that's what I bet he ends up getting, because of what they paid him last year and the year he had. I don't blame Ortiz for asking for a lot, because what's the downside for him? He is getting a contract one way or another, so he might as well get as much as he can.

Lucas made Star Wars. I am not a HUGE Star Wars guy, but I fucking repect it. Then he had to go make 3 more movies, that were just the worst. I'm just glad he is finally going away before he found a way to rape that franchise or another other anymore then he already has. Red Sox Making A Run At Gavin Floyd?

There are rumors flying around Twitter today that the Red Sox are making a push for White Sox starter Gavin Floyd. There is no word what the Red Sox would be giving up in the deal or how far along these talks are. My guess is that they aren't very far.

But for a second lets play the good old "what if" game. Gavin has 2 years $16.5MM left on his deal, which works out to be just $8.25/year. That isn't too bad at all. He turns just 29 years old at the end of January, so the he would only be 30 in the last year of his deal. He has stayed healthy over his career making at least 30 starts each of his last 4 years, has averaged 12.5 wins during that span and an ERA of 4.08. So basically he's exactly what you like in a 4th starter, and he did that in a hitter ballpark in Chicago, so you wouldn't expect too much of a change.

It makes a lot of sense to get this deal done if the White Sox asking price is right. Yet, I doubt it will happen, because the Red Sox have shown no interest in spending money.

Colts Fire Jim Caldwell

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell was fired yesterday as the Colts continue to clean house. This was actually a bit of surprising news, because most people assumed he was coming back and reports were that Manning wanted him back. That has been leading to some reporters to think this could be the end of the line for Manning with the Colts.

I disagree. I don't think it really matters who the OC or HC are for a team that has Peyton Manning. He runs his own offense, and makes audibles on almost every play anyways. The only way I can see him NOT being in a Colts uniform next year is if the Colts just don't feel he is going to be healthy enough to be their starter.

With the Celtics owning a 4-8 record and are obviously struggling to get out of the gate, expect the media and armchair GMs to make a big deal out of everything. The new trend is trading Paul Pierce, let me get this out of the way now, even if we were going to trade Paul Pierce he has a no trade clause which means we won't be able to acquire young talent from bad teams and we would only be dealing him to contenders that would have no real talent to give up. So I don't see the point.

Paul Pierce is fine, he is just out of shape and I don't know if we will win many games when he gets in more game shape, but he can definitely score more at will. We saw glimpses of him coming back against the Thunder. Hopefully he can get that to be more consistent.

With KG and Ray, I could justify trading them, even though I don't want to.

If I were the Celtics I would keep the team status quo and let everyone's contract expire. The Celtics are in a bad position, and nobody would give anything up for a KG that can hardly jump and play defense. Ray would be the most valuable asset to other teams I believe, because all contenders need a guy who can shoot like him and stretch the floor. However, it will be all contenders that will be looking for him and a 20-30 draft pick for him isn't worth it.

Danny has no options right now and has to wait and see if something falls in his lap. Otherwise, wait and see what happens this offseason.

Carl Crawford Got His Wrist Scoped

Well, as much as I am concerned and even if he misses the 1st couple of games, I'm not going to freak out about this. If this will help him in the long run, I'm all for it. I of course wish he got this done a little earlier, but whatever, what's done is done. And before everyone freaks out and pretends like they are baseball experts and say, "well wrist injuries are killers", Vernon Wells underwent surgery (performed by the same surgeon) to repair cartilage in his wrist in mid-November after the 2009 season. That was a season in which Wells had gotten on base at a .311 clip and slugged a career-worst .400. Wells played 157 games the following season and saw his slugging percentage jump to .515.

So this could really help Carl out in the long run and make him the .307 batting average with 19 homerun hitter he was in Tampa Bay.

V Mart Out For The Season With Torn ACL

Victor Martinez is out for the season with a torn ACL, taking the DH out for the year.

This sucks for the Tigers and losing an 100 RBI bat always sucks and they will now how to search threw the corpses left in free agency and see if Johnny Damon, Vladimir Guerrero, Hideki Matsui, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen.

But I want to just give a shout out to the people who are saying, "see it was a good move to let V Mart go", shut up. Injuries to people who leave is such a weird feeling, because it could be a thing where it's a different situation and they may not have been injured here.

Letting VMart go was one of the things I didn't understand that offseason and although he would most likely be a DH now, getting one and a half years of him at catcher would have been a lot better than what we dealt with last year. Also VMart was a good club house guy and seeing what happened last year, he could have only helped during the chicken and beer nonsense.

So you go on Google the title is blocked, you go on wikipedia they make you write your zip or something, you go on thechive there is some stupid petition all going against this SOPA thing.

I have no idea what this online privacy act is, and like everything, when it comes to voting or anything to do with semi politics, I'm going to ignore everything and assume it is going to turn out the way I would want.

I have tried to read about this, but I'll just be honest, I'm not smart enough to understand these things and I just read a paragraph got bored and moved on (just like me in college studying for things). So if one of you wants to explain it to me that would be greatly appreciated.

It does piss me off however, that these sites are making normal people like us suffer because they want me to do something. They are forcing me to have an opinion and I hate that. They are like the same people who would send me mass texts about Scott Brown or Obama. They made me almost want to vote and vote the other way, because how dare they push their bullshit politics on me.

Lightning 5, Bruins 3

In a span of 4 days, the Bruins have lost to the 4th and 5th place teams in the Southeast Division. These are the 14th and 15th teams in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins, an elite team, lost because they were outworked. It's that simple.

What makes the Bruins elite is that they play within a system, and they work just as hard, if not harder than their opponent. Remove the work, and they're not elite.

I'm sure they'll turn things around within the next few games. They always have under Julien. They go through stretches of bad play like this. Stretches when Lucic's passing is as accurate as Tim Tebow's. Stretches when only two or three forwards look like they know how to do anything. Stretches when they commit silly penalties in the offensive zone.

I'd like to see more Tuukka Rask for the next few games. Thomas hasn't looked bad, but he hasn't looked great. Tuukka's been red hot, and the B's should take full advantage of it.

As I said, I'm sure this stretch is just a stretch. We've seen this team struggle then suddenly turn things around. I'm pretty sure that in a few months, I'm not going to be remembering the January 17th loss to the Lightning.

Bruins play the Devils in Jersey on Thursday. Then they host the Rangers and visit the Flyers on the weekend. That's the 6th, 1st, and 4th place teams in the Conference right there. That should be enough to wake the B's up from this winter slumber.

The Bruins had to go 7 games to beat the Lightning last year in the playoffs, but much like the Canadiens it's been a rough year for the Lightning. Tampa is just 17-23-4 on the year and just 3-6-1 in their last 10 (losing 7 straight one of those in OT). They just can't get the goaltending they had last year, and really the only player that has been good is Stamkos.

The Bruins are going in having to play on back-to-back nights. They had to go to a SO to win last night, but they will have Thomas in net tonight, and when you got the best goalie in the league in net you're probably going to win. I think this game will be kind of close, because the Bruins have had to play a ton lately, but I just can't see them losing.

Bruins are just 1 point out of 1st in the East.

Fisher To Sign 5 Year Deal With Rams

Fisher is sign a five-year contract with Rams believed to pay him around $7 million annually. He had been picking between the Rams and the Dolphins, but all along most people anticipated he would end up signing with the Rams. The Rams have their QB (Bradford), and Fisher is going to be able to pick his GM to work with, which is a nice little perk.

I like Fisher, and I think this is a good signing. He is known for building some pretty decent defenses, so hopefully he can fix that awful defense out there. I do think he needs to go out and find a really good offensive coordinator, because someone needs to bring back Bradford to where he was. He also needs to get Bradford some offensive help. Basically, just some guys to throw to. It will be real interesting to see how long it takes him to get this team in the right direction.

Ed Reed Ready To Go?

When Ed Reed went down at the end of the Texans game this weekend I thought (and kinda hoped) he was done. He seems to be OK though, as the X-Rays came back negative on his ankle, and Reed has come out to say...

"I'll be all right. I'll get treatment and I'll be ready to go," he said after the game, per ESPN AFC North blogger Jamison Hensley. On Monday, Reed's head coach echoed the sentiment. "Ed looks like he's all right with the ankle," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh revealed, according to Hensley. "Everything's come up OK as far as the X-rays."

Ed Reed, even though he is getting older, is one of the most dangerous defensive players in the league. He scares the hell out of me, because I think he is one of the few guys that can actually lineup against Hernandez and Gronk and have a chance to hold them in check. I guess the question the Ravens have is whether or not they can pressure Brady. We all know that's how you beat the Patriots is pressure up the middle, but last week the Ravens didn't have 1 sack against the Texans. They do that against the Patriots they will get blown out.

Yes, that's Eddie George playing Julius Caesar. The Heisman winner and former Tennessee Titan is appearing as the title character in the Nashville Shakespeare Festival's production of Julius Caesar. I have to say it's a pretty smart move for the production. Good or bad, having Eddie George on the stage will sell tickets and create a buzz. And Eddie George seems like the type that would enjoy the unique experience.

Eddie George's post-NFL career has been busy and positive, which is refreshing. He's opened restaurants in Nashville, and Columbus, OH. He's all over television with appearances on reality shows and his own show on the Big Ten Network. And he's earned his MBA at Northwestern.

But his latest endeavor sparked a thought in my mind. What other Heisman winners could play characters from Shakespeare?

Doug Flutie would be a good Puck, a diminutive elf always up to mischief. Eric Crouch's confused indecision could make him a decent Hamlet. "To play safety for the Rams or not to play safety for the Rams?" Shylock's greed would suit Reggie Bush. Ricky Williams' decadence makes him a perfect John Falstaff. The religious Tim Tebow could play Angelo from Measure for Measure. I can't decide if OJ Simpson would be better as Othello or Brutus. Either way, I'm sure he'd give a killer performance.
