Is the NFL Really America’s Game Anymore?
Let’s look at some of the statistics and rule changes that the NFL has implemented:
The average penalties called in the 2012/2013 Regular season team wide were 2.81 with a total tally of 624 penalties called.
In the 2011/2012 Regular Season the NFL had a higher average of 3.13 with a total tally of 634 league wide.
The drop off in the average is a slim margin, but what’s notable is that the total number of penalties called league wide was more. The reason why I mention the statistical difference is because that although the League average was higher than the 2011/2012 season, the total number of penalties called were close with 2011 being 10 more than the 2012/2013 season. Albeit it’s only a difference of 10, but it shows that these penalties are being called a lot. It’s also worth noting teams are coached to adapt to the rule changes, but it’s hard. You play a certain way your whole life, then all of a sudden you have to change the way you’ve known.
I’m all for player safety and it’s a shame that it’s only until now (that we know of) the NFL realizes how damaging concussions and how a lot of players struggle once all their careers are over. But are we still watching Football anymore? Moving kickoffs to the 35 yard line? Now Running Back’s can’t lower their heads anymore either? Sure it’s fun to see home run touchdowns from QBs, but let’s face it; when we watch the games these days and see the way these Quarterbacks are getting Roughing the Passer Calls a lot of times, it’s a joke. I feel bad for Defenses who are just doing their job. It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
It might just be me, but I miss the days when Defense could play Defense. I miss those bone crushing hits that make you and your friends go “OOOOH!!!!!”...but now, you can barely touch Wide Receivers there by helping the Quarterbacks even more...
and in my opinion there are a lot questionable Pass Interference calls made these days; in my opinion at least.
With how the game has changed so much, with good intentions for the safety of the players, is it really Football anymore? As the players in the NFL have to adjust to the changes, so do the fans. But let’s face it...it’s a whole new different league now...and we should ask ourselves...is the NFL really going to remain as America’s favorite game? I don’t know; I guess we’ll just have to see.
