Tim Thomas Traded To Islanders

The New York Islanders have acquired goaltender Tim Thomas in a trade with the Boston Bruins, the teams said. The Bruins acquired a conditional second-round pick in 2014 or '15 in the deal. ESPN

Good riddance to the douche. It's funny, Thomas quit on the team and they were able to trade his douche corpse to the Islanders. Thomas will not be playing this year and is looking to come back next year, so he can play for the Olympics.

I know Rob will defend Thomas to death because of what he did, but Thomas is a douche and my thoughts became a reality this morning when D&C were interviewing Dale Arnold (You know someone who covers the team and around them all the time) and said Thomas was an absolute distraction last year, and that his teammates did not like him. He said that Andrew Ference and Tim Thomas didn't even acknowledge each other in the locker room and it was a very uncomfortable locker room last year due to him. Also, he said the Bruins were looking to move him last year, but because of his personality many GM's "didn't want to deal with his volatility."

He could have been an absolute legend here in Boston, much like Ray Allen, but chose his ego over that. Thomas will always be remembered for putting on the greatest show by a goalie ever, but will always have a "yea, but" after that statement gets made.

Later Thomas, you dickbag.

I am glad the dirt bag is gone

Please return all your Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup clothing, DVDs, memorabilia, and memories. Because that "dirt bag" is the biggest reason you have them.

And how is he a dirt bag? He gives up $3 million to spend time with his family. That's the definition of dirt bag these days?

Rob, we all know that is not the reason.

If Thomas retires, I'll give you a little bit more credit. But I think that is all just nonsense.

How do you know that, DP. What has he done that suggests he is doing anything but spending time in Colorado with his family?

You keep saying "that's a bullshit cop out" yet there is absolutely NOTHING that suggests any other reason for what he did.

Ummmm all of his actions last year and how he's a baby.

Also the confirmation I got he wasn't liked by his teammates as well as a strained relationship with the Bruins.

Rob, Tim Thomas actively chose to not fulfill his contractual obligations to the Bruins and in the process limited their ability to improve the team by eating up salary cap and by tanking his trade value in the process. We've had this discussion before, but I felt like his reasoning for doing so was flimsy at best. This doesn't cancel out what he did in 2011, but it certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm not upset that he's gone.

I'm sure Tim Thomas left a bad taste in Robs mouth to the way he blows him

I love this loyalty argument. So Mike, you dislike that Thomas hurt the Bruins' ability to trade him. So out of loyalty, he should have decided to play, so that the Bruins could trade him and get more? So Thomas should have been loyal to a team that he wasn't going to be a part of?

That's an insane, Medieval feudalism level of loyalty there.

With the fans in this town, and the media that went nuts because he expressed a weird political opinion, I can't blame Thomas for wanting to get away.

And his reasoning was "flimsy?" Really, Mike. What do you think the reason was? Because any theory your or DP or anyone else comes up with is even flimsier.

As I've said, Thomas has been quiet in Colorado. Maybe he's out there drinking and stockpiling ammunition. Maybe he's out there spending time with his family and practicing at Team USA's facilities. Like he said he was going out there to do.

Maybe he got sick of the NHL, and sick of the Bruins, and sick of fans who turn on Conn Smythe winning goalies because of photo ops with the President. He expressed a political opinion and people turned on him. They didn't just disagree with the opinion, they turned on him personally. This is America.

Maybe he didn't like the uncertainty of being traded wherever the Bruins could get the best deal. Who would want to spend a winter in Winnipeg? Maybe he didn't like the uncertainty of the Lockout. Had he decided to play this season, he'd only be getting about 59% of the $3 million in salary owed to him. $1.8 million, then after taxes more like $900,000. Maybe it wasn't worth it to him. He's made his money in the League. He can sit out a year, sign a new deal for a few million more if he wants to.

Tim Thomas did what was best for Tim Thomas. There's no denying that. Just like every pro athlete does what is best for them.

I never said anything about loyalty here Rob. You don't need to be loyal to somebody to fulfill your contractual obligations to them. In April 2009 he made a deal with the Bruins in good faith that he would play as their goaltender for the next four seasons. I took a look to try and get some of the more specifics of the deal. It seems like his contract was more front loaded.
"Thomas will make $6 million in 2009-10 and 2010-11, $5 million in 2011-12, and $3 million in 2012-13, the source said."
I wonder if it's a coincidence that he chose to take the $3MM year off rather than the $5MM or $6MM years off?

I also never said anything about his opting out of the White House visit. I've said before that if he doesn't want to meet the President he doesn't have to. He did try to warp the whole thing into a political statement and he had to know how the fans in a heavy blue state like Massachusetts would react. If he wants to make statements and butt heads with a mostly liberal fanbase in his spare time he's welcome to it, but don't tell me you can't do your fucking job because of it.

There's no "theory" here about why Thomas took the time off. His own stated reasons are flimsy.

"From the earliest age I can remember, I've wanted to be a hockey player. I've been blessed in my life to not only be able to live that dream, but to achieve more than I ever thought possible.

The singleminded focus that is necessary to accomplish a dream of this magnitude entails (by necessity) sacrifice in other areas and relationships in life.

At the age of 38, I believe it is time to put my time and energies into those areas and relationships that I have neglected. That is why at this time I feel the most important thing I can do in my life is to reconnect with the three F's.

Friends, Family, and Faith.

This is what I plan on doing over the course of the next year.

On top of this, I will continue to train using the ARP/POV system www.ultrafitevosport.com and work with G-Form www.g-form.com in the development of protective equipment.

What does this portend for the future?

We'll see….God's will be done.

TT"

I can't look at this and say anything other than WTF. This is why you're not fulfilling your obligations? Really? Couldn't you just retire next year and spend the rest of your fucking life worrying about those things? Is there an expiration date on this? Is somebody dying of cancer?

What if the shoe was on the other foot here? What if the Bruins said "Hey Tim, I know we said we'd pay you those millions of dollars this year to do your job, but nevermind, I think I'd rather use that money to focus on the three Fs". It's not as bad as it could have been because Tukka is an excellent replacement, everybody was focused on the lockout, the Bruins didn't seem crazy about having him around going forward and they were able to unload his contract eventually.

A deal is a deal, but not to Tim Thomas I guess.
