As I was heading into work today there was what seemed to be a homeless man on the train with me. Looking at him, as he looked as if he hadn't showered in week, I naturally starting thinking of Rasheed Wallace (Come on, he does look homeless)...
Anyways, I was thinking about the Celtics loss last night, and their natural progression so far this season. DP and I have been talking a lot lately about how bad NBA refs have been. It is now at the point where I have a hard time watching a lot of Celtics games, because (not to sound too much like a homer) it seems the refs are really going after the Celtics.
Why is this (if it is true)?
I started thinking about the roster, and the Celtics have a bunch of guys who have a tendency to jump all over the refs (Garnett, Perkins, Sheed, Pierce, ect). Wallace obviously being the head guy, in that regard. We have seen him battle non-stop with refs throughout most of the season. To the point where the NBA has had to step and take back some of the technicals, because there was no just cause for them being called in the first place.
So, what am I trying to get at?
What if the Celtics struggles are being magnified, because of the calls that are being forced on them. Doesn't it seem like the calls this season are never in the Celtics favor. I know I sound like Tommy Heinsohn here, but is it really that much of a conspiracy theory? Doc is seeing it. Have you ever seen him this upset consistently with the refs? I know I sure haven't.
So, my question to all NBA fans is... Am I just making excusing for the Celtics, or has the arrival of Rasheed suddenly pushed the ever important (and seemingly vengeful) "officiating" against them?

I agree. The celtics get fucked constantly for BS fouls and technicals. I don't know if this is a league wide problem, but this is the worst officiating I have ever seen in my life this season.
it seems to be getting out of control. So was is a mistake to sign Sheed then?
no not at all. he is a hell of player and a championship caliber one at that. The refs are just taking away from the game. The league should do something about the refs, because it isn't the Celtics fault.
You can make the comparison to Randy Moss and the Patriots. Randy is a great player, but his own mind gets in the way. The only difference between Rasheed and Randy, is that you will never see Rasheed take a play off.
Now to be a downer on the guy because I like him, but couldn't you say "taking a play off" would be very much like the fact that Sheed doesn't go down and play the post all the time when he should. Guy seems unstoppable under there, wouldn't that have something to do with effort?
It is just a tought, but the Celtics didn't seem to have these ref problems before Sheed came. I'm not saying it is completely his fault, but there is certainly some evidence there that things have changed...
Thats his game though. It's no lack of effort and keeps a defense honest. I don't think it's him being lazy on the offensive end, it's him being him. Plus basketball is a two way sport, so if shooting 3s saves energy on the offensive end, I will deal with that.
While Randy Moss, has blatantly not cared on some plays.
to answer the question in the post, yes you are making excuses for the celtics. amazing how when the team argues every call the fans do as well. i mean, wow, listen to you gys, the league should step in? HAHAHA you are all seriously delusion and this is just your homerness being expressed.
point blank, yes it seems like the refs have it out for you. news flash, too fucking bad. the celtics dont help themsleves by bitching about EVERYCALL. if they didnt complain, theyd have fewer techs thats for sure.
so you and your team, stop bitching. its what got yall in this mess to begin with. one more time, STOP COMPLAINING, the refs prolly do have it out for u... thats what happens when you bitch and moan like sheed.
sucks now play ball like a team that has 4 potential HOFs as starters. god damn cry babies.
Interesting points, but just to explain something..
"i mean, wow, listen to you gys, the league should step in? HAHAHA you are all seriously delusion and this is just your homerness being expressed."
The NBA has had to step in and take away techs already this season. You don't see that too often around the NBA. Isn't that cause for concern?
But, yes I somewhat agree the Celtics do bitch too much and I think it is starting to bring it on themselves. Still, NBA refs are the worst.
bmack,
no your totally right the NBA refs are awful, and when I watch celtic games with no home town bias, any idiot can see the calls arent exactly swigning for the celitcs.
as to my comment, I know the league steps in and takes away techs when needed... which is awesome they need to. the one on doc last week was just stupid, and it is cause for concern. but i called you all delusion b/c it seemd as if you wanted something more.
what else should the league do, train refs on celtics games? fire ppl cuz ur whole team irrates refs?... the formula is ultra simple
your team bitches constantly all the time about everything in a way that hasnt been seen in the NBA since the early 90's when complaining was part of the game... and so you now your shocked you dont get calls, or get calls against you?
seems like simple math to me, tell sheed to STFU.
Or maybe refs should just do their jobs. Seems like the thing I would focus on if I was a ref after all scandals with betting, and calling unfair games.
I see where you are coming from Ash. However, you're wrong. Yes, the team bitches, yes the team has loudmouths on it, but there is no reason for all these T's to be passed around. If Tim Duncan said what Rasheed said, I guarantee it wouldn't be a tec. I think the NBA should hold the refs accountable for bad or outlandish calls, the same way the league has for it's players. If the NBA rescinds a T, the ref should be fined a certain amount. I bet if they did that, a lot less controversy would happen.
I should make my stance clear here, I don't disagree with you guys. every game in any sport should be called by the book, with no outside bias to players and what not.
now in the real world , tim duncan wouldnt get a tech and sheed would. however, thats stupid to say b/c tim duncan doesnt open his mouth every god damn second and sheed does. therefore, duncan would get a pass, sheed wont.
its not as biased as you think either. sheed has been warned for years now, he knows not to argue calls and he still does, so his leash is shorter, you cant argue the reasoning behind that and for the refs thats fair.
bob's point is more in the gray area. i think hes right to question if its a bad signing, im not a celtic fan but it seems as tho hes caused his whole team to respond like he does, thus giving the whole team a shorter leash after a few games and them and their fans the impression the world is against them.
its a team mentality that can easily be changed, no excuses.
also, your idea of having the refs fined if a T gets recinded opens up a slippery slope indeed... but i think the idea is amazing and i hope the league would consider it.
the tech on doc being the best example.
Yea I really like that idea DP. If the league decides there was no reason for the tech to be called the ref should be fined/banned from the playoffs/or both
I think there is def something to it. Too bad Donaghy's book won't get published (yet) and we won't know for sure. But in the excerpt I read it basically said point blank that the refs gun for certain guys. That's not a Celtic problem. That is a league problem.
On another note...the Celtics' bitching and complaining is really starting to wear on me(huge C's fan). A lot of the time I'm sitting there watching thinking...Perk! How do you not think you fouled that guy??? Jesus. You hacked him! But then there are some touchy ones too.
And I know this makes me sound old and lame, but...I coach HS basketball in the inner-city in PHX and I can def say that today's kids learn this bitching and moaning from the NBA guys. Kobe, Timmy Duncan, KG, Amare...basically any NBA star that has a look of disgust when the whistle blows. I've addressed it numerous times with my team to very little results. The things these kids say to refs and other players is unbelievable.
Also, I think Sheed and Moss is a decent comparison. I don't know about y'all but I prefer my big men in the low-post for the most part. The occasional step out for a three is fine for guys like Sheed and Dirk, but they're too effective in the paint to give up on that part of the game.
